Creature Features Week: Goke, Bodysnatcher From Hell

Here at TOG we like the horror blog community and appreciate the opportunity to network and help other horror critics, that's why Crankenstein jumped at the chance to hop on board this Creature Feature week, so please check out the links at the bottom and discover other cool horror blogs and pals of Theater Of Guts and support them as well!
Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell Directed By Hajime Sato (1968)
Out of the Shochiku factory studios came a host of Alien invaders who took over the mid 60’s, infecting the youth with monster-itus and space herpes! Films like X From Outer Space, The Living Skeleton and even Kinji Fukasaku’s Green Slime. Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell, is my favorite out of the group, it features a menacing space bloodsucker who oozes blue lava out of his forehead, the 60’s Mod style lighting is very psychedelic and features a cheap looking model airplane cast against a blood red sky (Tarantino would later steal this intentionally for Kill Bill). Mario Bava's cinematography and lighting schemes were a major influence on the look of Goke. The passengers are all Asian accept for one white lady (who they talk shit about behind her back). They start out gradually getting more paranoid of each other, then eventually, the tension reaches a boiling point, the suspiciousness of each other seem influenced by Rod Serling! ("The Monsters Are Due on Main St". comes to mind). The signs that Japan is becoming more dangerous are conveyed through assassinations in newspapers read on the plane by lurid businessmen. In fact most of the characters are unhinged and at each other's throats aboard the aircraft hurtling toward doom and destruction.
I took too many hits of Orange Sunshine
Suicidal crows dive-bomb into the sides of the plane and creating a harbinger for more foreboding dread to come later. A suave dapper passenger with cool guy shades and crazy amounts of mascara in a turtleneck sweater is the first victim of the space virus. He infects all the others by way of a space hickey, that character is played by Hideo Ko, who a few years later, played one of the freaks lurking in the background in Horrors of The Malformed Man. He pulls a gun and takes a few hostages, simultaneously as an alien spacecraft intercepts the flight and shuts off the wires, forcing it drop thousands of feet down into an emergency landing. The plane hijacker moves toward a cavern flooded with magma and becomes hypnotized by the ominous light which hides an oozing mass of blue liquid erupting from the UFO that creeps toward his face and slithers its way into his brain cavity, his face seals it in. The passengers have now gone into panic mode and bicker at each other for awhile, pulling  the blame game and trying to point the finger at each other as they run out of food and rations. The film is not only a good UFO space rabies flick, but also has political context that involves Vietnam trauma (Kathy Horan, star of Green Slime plays the white woman, whose husband was killed in Nam) and the suspicions about each other’s motives could be an allegory for Mccarthyism. There’s more depth in this film than just a typical rubber monster movie. The eyeliner hijacker criminal comes back for help, but is carrying an alien host in his skull that sluices out and infests others, turning them into catatonic vessels, the alien blob has a slowed down warbled tone of voice! Sometimes it resembles a blue puddle of intergalactic vomit. It talks through a girl named Noriko ontop of a hillside and mentions it’s race is the Gokemidoro, whose objective is to exterminate the human population.
Lend me some more mascara or I'll blow your face off
The film offers no hope and shows how in a moment of heightened paranoia and terror, people become viciously selfish and do not work together to fix a problem. They take their chances in a split second, when the chips are down, they save thier own ass! I find this cynical view on humanity refreshing and it makes Goke seem ahead of its time, combining alien invasions, war metaphors and distrust of our fellow human beings into a nice doom laden bombshell of a good creature feature! The film has less nudity then other Asian horror flicks (mainly the Shaw Brothers catalog and Shochiku film maker Oshima Nagisa), but don’t hold that against it, remember its still the 60’s and these film would get more debaucherous as they moved along through the decades almost too much in fact. It's totally worth seeking out, because you get a douce of nihilism with your MechaGodzilla. Check it out! Criterion put this out a few years ago in a nondescript boxset and it’s available to stream on Huluplus.
Please check out all the links over at Candy Coated RazorBlades as they become available! Thanks to Bob Mallett and The Incredibly Strange Horror Bloggers Network for involving me in Creature Features Week!

Deranged

Deranged Directed By Alan Ormsby & Jeff Gillen. Starring Robert Blossum (1974)
Alan Ormby is a fascinating character that gets stranger the more information I find, he wrote Deranged, Death Dream, acted in and wrote Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things, created Hugo The Man of 1000 Faces; the inspiration for The Love Butcher and invented the peanut butter blood recipe (that no one really uses, so strike one)! I had his incredible book on Monster movie lighting and effects in elementary school (click here). It really goes into cheap lighting and creepy make-up two attributes that really make Deranged a fun time!
Ormsby is not really that highly regarded or cared about, mostly Tom Savini and Bob Clark get all the credit for Deranged (I’m even guilty of that, I mean the effects in this are phenomenal)! Ormsby gets eclipsed, especially in the light of super talented genius' like Clark and Savini, but he's no slouch either!
Deranged is one of the most accurate portrayals of the Ed Gein story (nothing is obscured or loosely based on, it’s the real deal), like on Dragnet though, only the names have been changed to protect the cannibalistic. There’s a Rod Serling type narrator played by Les Carlson (Black Christmas, Videodrome) who oversteps his boundaries and even shows up wedged in between Ezra and his mother’s corpse at one point.
Does anyone have any Febreze?
Robert Blossum (Christine, Escape From Alcatraz) does a top notch job of playing Ezra Cobb, the mother-fixated grave robbing, skin wearing butcher of Woodside. There’s a disturbing level of black comedy that borders on the ghastly, often erasing some of the gags that half work. The reality of Ed Gein is worse than anything all copy cat films could have put together combined. Read the hideous details in the Harold Schechter book Deviant, it's a nice companion piece to this film, because it really illustrates the madness that went on in the kitchen, (collected skull bowls, earlobes and dried out genitals) and Gein’s warped mind.
Ez is pretty much an insane retard with the mind of a child and would boast about his grave robbings, telling all the dumb farmers about his crimes, but of course no one took him seriously. His domineering fanatical Christian mother quickly dies right in the beginning as Ezra shovels pea soup down her gullet, she looks like the withered corpse of George Washington. I had a certain level of sympathy for Ezra Cobb (for some godawful reason,)! as he helplessly watches his mother croak.   There’s an eerie moment as he exhumes his mother’s grave and is relieved to find her cryptic smile in the blackness, staring back at him, then moments later he is repulsed as the reality strikes and her decaying flesh pulls away like melted green soap.
suddenly I'm gettin a hankering for some Quaker Oats
It gets progressively weirder from then on and all sympathy that I may have had shuts off like a tourniquet, as Ez begins his gleefully murderous rampage! Cashiers, waitresses and chubby psychics fall victim to this redneck dressed in the sewn up butchered skin of his mother (his flesh suit looks oddly familiar to the Bill Moseley character later seen in House Of A 1000 Corpses, to me at least)!
Do I smell like limburger or headcheese, I can't tell?
The same theme of all women are sluts and should die horribly because “Jesus approves” is the message conveyed and carried out by Ezra and the rotten corpse of his self-deluded and crazed religious fanatic mother. There’s a dinner scene Leatherface would be proud to attend with all of Ez’s victims present as a poor waitress in her underwear is tied to a chair, this film mixes a little Chainsaw Massacre in with it’s Norman Bates. This one predates Chainsaw, but I doubt there was an influence, I think it was purely coincidental. Deranged attempts to cover all bases and is sinister in a fun, campy, ghoulish manner and to me is one of the best portrayals of the Ed Gein story. Bob Clark produced this uncredited and it was filmed in Canada (most of the cars have Ontario plates). The trailer is great too! This was a film swallowed up by the vortex of Netflix Stream-aggedon, but thankfully its available on a cheap DVD double feature that includes Motel Hell.

Escape From Coral Cove

Escape From Coral Cove (Tao Chu Hu Hai) Directed By Ga Jan Cheung 1986
A group of Asian templar knights attend a seaside funeral, the coffin is lit on fire and then submerged, where it crushes a waterlogged zombie's hand. An instrumental version of Jan Hammer like keyboards playing "In my House" by The Rick James backup singers group is blasted during the credits as Alex and his foxy chick drive around. The white on white subs are pretty excruciating, Alex threatens to unleash his "Pink Panther" on the girls. They all stay in at his house (the production design makes it seem like no one lives there). One girl finds a secret experimental chemistry lab and a levitating wicker basket (is an Asian Belial not far behind)? Sadly no!

Maybe the crummiest Asian horror monster of all time

A mysterious swamp creature seems to be lurking about in the shadows (it's not the Oily Maniac though). This behemoth preys on drunks urinating in graveyards and their wives. The picture quality is so shitty during the night that its hard to make out the beastly invader.
Then it goes from hard to see night footage to bright daylight, as the crew aboard The Pink Panther (that's a boat apparently not a penis reference) frolic! The film might as well not be subtitled at all, because half the letters get scrambled by the white on white subs or get cut off all together. Some exciting elements include a crushing cup contest (Dreyfuss vs. Quint Jaws reference?) and some water jousting.
Your move Asian Robert Shaw

Escape From Coral Cove is basically someone's home movie sloppily strewn together, why am I watching it? Skunkape was nice enough to find it for me! There are two Escape titles in the Deep Red catalog (Escape From Hong Kong and just plain Escape). I was sad to figure out that this one is neither of them as I first thought when I went ahead and reviewed it. There's a character graphic in the left handcorner throughout the film (its from a VCD). If you are expecting a typically exciting or gruesome Asian funfest like I was, you'll be miserable like I was! But if you like dull home movies with a hidden sea monster that barely shows up, then by all means seek out this piece of shit! I couldn't wait to escape from this movie! All the ingredients that make Asian horror flicks stand out from the rest are missing, there's no nudity and minimal amounts of blood. Total garbage, don't waste your time!
Totally Sucks! (on the Deep Red Gore score this would get a Dog rating)

not enough beer on the planet to make this tolerable

Sexy Nights Of The Living Dead

Sexy Nights Of The Living Dead Directed By Joe D'Amato, starring George Eastman (1980)
This is one of those Joe D'Amato films that should start with a warning; keep your pants up while viewing or you may end up puking on your own crotch! This cinematic morsel tries to mix hardcore porn with hardcore gore and comes up limp in both genres!
Joe is a master when it comes to an all out tropical vacation with doses of snuff, animal antics and an infamous traveling manipulative slut (I.E. The Laura Gemser Emmanuelle series). That's were he's an accomplished director and Laura is even featured in this one, plus other welcome or unwelcome stars show up, it's all tedious and uneven. Although the ending is worth writing home about and morphs into a cross between Zombie and Last House On The Left, so take this warning to task that I give you (make sure you fall asleep, then set your alarms for the climax, because its a gusher)!
EWW, Ahem..... Ok so back to the review (wait let me put on my hazmat suit as I write this, I don't want any ball wart germs or jungle rot)!
Pluto Kennedy (or Marcello Giombini) busts out with an Italio-disco ripoff of the Fabio Frizzi Zombie theme as we meet Larry (an unhinged and horny) George Eastman. This film dares to involve heavy concepts like "is it all a fantasy? Is this scenario in a fenced in asylum/ industrial laundry room foreshadowing? It's a headscratcher that Eastman actually wrote himself, I'm thinking so he can excuse those D'Amato random sex scenes and non-sequitors.
A sexy nurse humps Larry (Eastman) as a 70's Donald Sutherland impersonator comically wacks off (already we are on a Benny Hill-esque Italian trainwreck)! As I mentioned before in D'Amato's world there are no explanations or set ups for what goes on, people just do shit, one minute they are on a boat, the next on land (just go with it Maaan)! Could it all be in the mind of Eastman, I'm not telling, I suffered through this dreck and now its your turn!
Thankfully (I mean unthankfully) Mark "Ball Warts" Shannon joins the expedition to "Cat Island" but first this Italian Magnum PI impersonator has a threesome in a shower, these graphic sex scenes add nothing to the story and as far as I can tell they were edited out when aired on Showtime or Cinemax in the 80's. After that revolting spectacle we are treated to another as the two hookers flee the scene and a sultry woman joins Mark for some champagne and a second helping of chlamydia (Uck)! Get me out of here!
Here's to Herpes

Finally a cannibalistic ghoul shows up and attempts to make it tolerable. This hulking figure looks like John C. Reilly as The Tenacious D Sasquatch in a monk robe, he takes a chunk out of the neck of Mark's travel agent. Laura Gemser Jr.  or the actress from Porno Holocaust shows up to bone Larry for a few minutes then disappears. Then he runs into a zombie that looks like Kramer from Seinfeld with maggots oozing out of his eyesocket, Larry chucks an anchor at his face! They make it out to "Cat Island", where Mark has plans to build a resort, but doesn't tell anyone yet. Why is it called Cat island? Who knows, why does Candy Apple Island have giant apes? Same reason!
Next we are treated to a champagne swallowing beaver in a disco, beavers on the sand and lots of humping on the boat. I'm starting to sprout a cold sore just from this review! It turns out Laura Gemser and her grandfather are expecting their arrival as a loud cat meows in an echoey tone by the cemetery (scared yet?, me neither). But wait! it does make sense, because the famous cat of "Cat Island" shows up, this spooky cat patrols the island. MEOOWWW!
My sand, my beach, Go home!
Grampa has a giant gumball growing out of his forehead and doesn't like Shanon's plans of building a hotel on sacred ground! It turns out Gemser is a bi-sexual ghost and haunts the panties right off of Larry's woman, then bangs Larry in the water (he keeps his jeans on, Ouch)! The mysterious old man hands Larry a "Greg Brady" Tiki idol for protection as zombies begin to emerge from behind the palm trees, this is where the movie stars picking up momentum. The soundtrack sometimes sounds like the begining of Cars by Gary Neuman. Ole Warty balls goes to look for Gemser to molest, but instead gets attacked by zombie monks (who looks like a cross between Star Wars sandpeople and the Blind Dead). It gets worse for him though, because after a triumphant battle with the undead, he unfortunately gets the Fred Lincoln treatment from Laura (think Lorena Bobbit too).
Sorry Gemser but that wad of meat is also your paycheck!

The last 18 minutes make up for the first hour or so, because it gets really gruesome, maybe it was worth the torture. Do Larry and his beach babes escape? Find out for yourself! I'm gonna take a nap!

The Bloody Judge

The Bloody Judge Directed by Jess Franco. Starring Christopher Lee (1970).
Jess Franco out does himself with this take on a different witchfinder, one sanctioned by the burning court to persecute suspected traitors both real and imaginary, Judge George Jeffreys is played by Christopher Lee. I am a sucker for witch burning flicks and this one is pretty good, not as vile and repulsive as Mark Of The Devil, but it's the second film with a British horror pro, the first being Vincent Price as the cruel Matthew Hopkins in Witchfinder General.
All innocent victims are thrown on the flames of tyranny and irrationalism during Middle Age England. Christopher Lee is decked out in powdered wig and dalmatian collared robe. Like all the witch condemning authority of other films in the genre, Jeffries is a total horn dog, that takes out his sexual frustration on innocent girls, he's also a wiz on the pipe organ and a lurid philanthropist. The executioner is played by resident Franco staple, Howard Vernon and he's the lucky chap who gets to brand women and torture down in the dungeon. Vernon looks super creepy in his executioner get-up and his face reminds me of this horrid vintage halloween mask (the hooded henchmen one).
Are you as happy as I am?

Many of the citizens in this film are hideous, with jagged teeth, unibrows and loose fitting bowl wigs, only pretty females in town are accused of witchcraft. The attractive Gray sisters are captured, first Alicia is burned alive before her sibling and put to death. Mary tries to escape with her boyfriend on a boat to the New World, but the idiot is connected to Judge Jeffreys co-worker and the bloody judge finds out.
Franco seems more concerned with historical re-enactments and cannon battles then showing scenes of naked female torture like most witch burning films. This time period is after Cromwell's death and you don't need to rely on the history to figure out what's going on. I admire this commitment and it's definitely not what you want from a smut peddler like Jess Franco.
Satchel likes his chicken spicy

Satchel, a mutilated henchmen to Judge Jeff, beats on wenches and calls them sluts, he is jealous of Mary and her boyfriend.
This is the unrated version and there is some abrupt German scenes during the last 30 minutes (hence the subs in the shot of Lee). At one point the evil judge sentences 50 people to have their entrails ripped out and then shoved down their throats! now I don't know about you, but that seems excessive!
taste's like a schnozzberry

There's a crazy scene where Mary methodically licks the blood off of a nearly dead women's body as the henchmen leer at this sight. The German scenes are crucial and make the Bloody Judge go from historical to sleazy Franco territory, where we all know he's a master craftsmen! Mary is supposedly defiled by the Judge in exchange for her boyfriend's freedom (some stunt hands (not Lee's) are used for the sex scene). Even if you were to fall asleep during the history lesson, you don't really need it to follow along. This is one of my favorite Jess Franco's (and I usually get narcolepsy during his other flicks)! It's an early example of a decent witchburning flick besides the more famous ones (like Witchfinder and The Devils). It was one of the casualties in the Netflix stream-ageddon, so I made sure I re-watched it along with many others. Rest in peace Jess Franco.

Interview with Graham Rae Of Deep Red

Graham & Makeup artist Greg Nicotero
Ok TOG readers it's that time again, time when I skin the carcass of Mike Wallace and do my guerrilla journalist schtick! Today I'm interviewing Graham Rae, who is an accomplished author currently working on a career retrospective of the films of Jorg Buttgereit. Graham is featured in John Szpunar's book Xerox Ferox (read his interview here). He writes for www.realitystudio.org, the world's top William S Burroughs website, and has written for the likes of Film Threat and 3:am magazine.com, but most important of all, he had an adolescence I'd gouge out my eyeballs for, writing his genius ramblings in the pages of Deep Red!

1. How did you meet Chas Balun
Convoluted story. When I was 17 I first read The Gore Score, his chapbook of capsule reviews of 80s splatter movies. I think I read about it in Fangoria, which I used to read as a teen. I liked it a lot and wrote to him, asking him if I could be a foreign correspondent for him, because he had Deep Red. He said he liked the idea. So in August 1988 I went down to London from my old Scottish home town of Falkirk to the sadly-now-defunct grindhouse the Scala Cinema, and saw Nekromantik, in its first UK screening (there have been very few of these, because I think it may still even be banned in the UK, though I'm not certain) at Shock Around the Clock, an all-night festerville (my word), and wrote the first American review of it. This was published in Deep Red 6, though before that, in issue 5, I had published an article entitled 'All Cut Up' (about censorship in the UK which I was, well, all cut up about!), my first ever USA publication, in 1988. The next year I went down to Shock Around the Clock 3 and a young guy came up to me (I was only 19-going-on 20 myself) and asked me if I was Graham Rae. Ready for a fight, I confessed that I was. He said his name was (and still is!) Justin Stanley and he wanted to do a horror fest like SATC!, "SplatterFest 90". He asked me if I would like to help organize it, and I gave him Chas Balun's phone number, who gave him some other numbers of Hollywood luminaries like Scott 'Intruder' Spiegel. Other numbers Justin got by himself - he basically organized 99% of the thing himself, with me just doing talking stints during the fest between films at the event. But we went across to the USA in December 1989 to meet some of the guests. We stopped off in Pittsburgh, where we were going to meet Tom Savini, but it never happened. Still, we visited Monroeville Mall, where (as you and your readers will no doubt know) Romero shot Dawn of the Dead. Then we flew on to LA and stayed at Chas's house for a couple of days. He made us huge cheeseburgers and we had free reign of his video collection of the weird and obscure splatter shit we had breathlessly read about in Deep Red. He was a very talented artist and there were beautiful paintings of monkeys and such he had done on his walls. He also had splatter props lying around, as evidenced by my picture!
Then from there we went to Hollywood and stayed in a motel and visited Scott Spiegel, who took us to the KNB studios (lot of dead buffalo lying around from Dances With Wolves!), where we were shown around by the inimitable FX genius Greg Nicotero, and took us over to his old Michigan buddy Sam Raimi's house in Silverlake to get drunk with him on vodka and orange! Incredible experience for two young guys, and I can still hardly believe it ever happened! But that's how I first met Chas, plus with a wee bit of waffle thrown in as well.
Lester Bangs hits the beach

2.I've read that one of your influences besides other greats like (Bukowski, JG. Ballard and Burroughs) is Lester Bangs do you see a kindred connection between Lester Bangs and Chas Balun?
I can definitely see a correlation between Lester and Chas, and it's ironic that they would both wind up being such major headspinfluences in my own life, with regard to music and music writing, and films and film writing, respectively. Both were born the same year, 1948. They obviously grew up with a lot of the same cultural influences and loves. They were both first and foremost extremely intelligent fans of their chosen milieus, would write on a street level for their fans, no bullshit, no hype, no hassle, and you knew they were just like you and you could trust them. They were both pretty wild writers, with Chas having a liking for the more extreme splatter films, and Lester having a love of extreme, trashy music. They were both great conversational writers too, and both came out of the 60s; it was just that Lester died very young. If he had still been alive I would assume, or like to think at least, that his level of enjoyment of, and commitment to, his art and the art he wrote about, would have been just as durable as Chas's was. Chas was also an old hippie, so he was very music-based - and they both would write about drug experiences sometimes! Both were also very irreverent when it called for it, with regards to some of the utter shit they had to sit through in reviewing stuff or writing articles about it. They were just free spirits, neither of whom truly made a living from writing (Lester did so more than Chas, though not a great living at that), and whose gutter-level views and musings in the venues they chose meant that they could write about what they wanted in whatever way they wanted without fear of censorship. They were excellent salesman, very productively seductive writers, and they could make you buy into the world of any good or bad or ugly piece of art they wanted to with their cynicism or extreme humor - they were both hilarious - or rude or erudite examinations of whatever it was that was under discussion. They both seemed incredibly generous to young people - I will always thank Chas for giving me my start in writing - and nurturing of youthful talents. I mean, shit, man, I was a fucking teenager writing for him! And Lester helped people like Cameron Crowe and would write for any old obscure fanzine that asked him. And they just ultimately loved with all their hearts the stuff they wrote about, and that enthusiasm came through loud and clear to the reader. Both changed my life as a teen. And both are still sorely missed.
Graham & Chas in the green inferno

3.One of your greatest reviews in Deep Red Alert is Meet The Feebles, when I read that, after I immediately ordered it from Balun, talk about early Pete Jackson as opposed to now.
Thanks for the compliment, though I'm not sure the review was all that great! I first saw Bad Taste in a black-and-white French-language bootleg before it even came out in the UK - a friend and I were part of the bootleg trading circuit by that point, after I was given a trading list at Shock Around the Clock 2 as I waited in the line outside, and we started trading with a guy from London, then with others from the back pages of fanzines like Samhain, whom I also wrote for. I had first heard of it in Gorezone 2 (an offshoot of Fangoria) and remember clearly a two-page spread of an exploding head in the mag that I thought was amazing. A friend and I, Davey Blair, became HUGE Pete fans and we loved his first three movies - Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and Braindead (aka Dead Alive in the USA, but that's a stupid fucking title so I can never call it that - plus it has dialogue cuts too, which is shitty) and would sit and get wasted and sing along to the songs from MTF. We got a round of applause for drunkenly singing the Sodomy Song at a fest in Edinburgh one time!
Trevor the Fox singing Sodomy!

I still love those three films, and think the fan ghetto mentality, where they deride Jackson for becoming one of the biggest directors in the world and leaving their beloved genre, to be complete horseshit. He made incredibly gory and funny splatter movies a la Monty Python - how far can you go with that splatstick schtick? Good luck to the man, he's a self-made, self-taught genius, and anybody who would mock that is just small-minded or jealous or stupid. Or any combination thereof. And I'll tell you a funny true story. In 1996 I was in LA and went to a signing in a sci-fi bookstore that Pete was doing (along with Jeffrey Combs) for The Frighteners, which is not a good movie, particularly. I went down there with Justin Stanley, David E Williams of Film Threat Video Guide, and Jim VanBebber, director of The Manson Family. I got a Frighteners poster for Davey back in Falkirk, but nothing for myself, cos I didn't really care - the Scots affect a cool detached cynicism much of the time towards famous people, a trait that has gotten me into trouble a few times! But I got to the front of the line and asked Pete to sign the poster "To Davey - the best singer in the Feebles chorus." He looked at me and smiled and said, in his excellent New Zealand accent, "I'll sign it - as long as you'll tell me you're not Scottish!" There is a lot of Scottish blood in New Zealand, and his parents are English, but he was just fucking around. (An ironic aside - he co-directed Forgotten Silver, a mockumentary about a Scottish-roots 'lost' filmmaker, the next year! Maybe our meeting gave him some ideas!)
another drunken horror convention

I jokingly said to him "Don't gimme any of that shite, pal, or I'll take you outside and kick your fucking arse!" He said "Oh, alright!" and signed my poster, and was asking me if I was there on holiday or what. I confirmed this, and when we got outside Dave Williams was pissed off that I had sworn in front of Pete and was grumbling about it! I am chuckling here. But yeah. Pete was an only child who taught himself how to make films and ended up making the biggest films in the history of the world. How can you fault that? I thought Heavenly Creatures was great, though I didn't like King Kong - thought it was way too long and bloated, a vanity project run awry - and have never seen The Lovely Bones. Nor do I have any wish to. I thought the Lord of the Rings films were great, for what they were. I was the only person in the cinema in Falkirk to cheer when they mentioned a 'Wynyard' wine in the first film - it's the name of the junkie knifethrower frog from Meet the Feebles! Pete's just such a terrific talent and I will always support him - shit, man, I have been watching his films for 26 years now, and I still quote them occasionally!
Deep Red 5 1988, Graham's first ever writing publication

4.What was it like as a young writer contributing to such a vital and important zine like Deep Red?
It was an utterly incredible experience from start to finish. I used to get some lager on a Friday night and rent some shit out of the local shop and get drunk and watch the films and write reviews for it. It was an incredible kick to see my writing in print as a teen. I still get a kick out of seeing my stuff in print now, but back then it was so new and vital and fun. You felt part of an elect select club, the Deep Red crew, and every time another issue came out it was a joyous thing. Funnily enough, when Deep Red 4 came out, with a letter I wrote to the mag asking for a George A Romero interview (I was a huge Romero fan and ended up being a zombie in Land of the Dead, and that story can be found here: http://www.filmthreat.com/features/1596/), Davey Blair was living and working in London - we hadn't seen each other since high school, where we were not friends - Davey saw it and he brought it up to me a couple of years later in Falkirk when we were in our mad movie phase! I felt part of a scene for a while, an underground scene defying the bullshit Tory government and their worthless video nasties censorshit nonsense - and it was much more fun to get a poor-quality bootleg of a censored-or-banned-or-unreleased film because you were doing something taboo and illicit. Literally illicit - people's lives were ruined with the stigma of being prosecuted and persecuted just for watching horror movies! My first ever American newsprint mention, in the editorial of Fango 72, was me angrily railing about the British Board of Film Classification and how they had cut Day of the Dead and such! But Deep Red will always hold a special place in my heart purely for the time that it comes from - my teen years and very early 20s - and the camaraderie of the horror scene in the UK, with fans visiting each other and getting drunk and going to fests and just having a great fucking time applauding the messy deaths and such madness! Writing for Deep Red led to some other writing gigs for me, on stuff like Film Threat Video Guide and American Cinematographer and Cinefantastique (those three all due to David E Williams, who would drag me along to each new rag he edited or whatever), so I will always value it for that too. If Chas had not given me the confidence to put my teenage belly-rumbling grumblings and ramblings out there, which he did simply by publishing them, my life would have been a very different, poorer place. The last ever email I got from him was in 2004 when I told him I was going to the Land of the Dead set (I didn't know at that point I was going to be in the film!) and he told me to 'make the beast of it,' and I realized then that he had obviously been hugely inspired in his puns by Forrest J Ackerman. His youthful love of horror movies and things that go hump and bump and jump and thump in the night had never left him, and never did until the sudden, unexpected-to-me day he died. All of this 80s horror zine stuff is super-comprehensively documented by John Walter Szpunar in his new excellent book Xerox Ferox, (which comes out in September at the Fantacon in New York. I am going to be on a Deep Red panel discussing the mag, and, sadly, it looks more or less like Chas will be the only main writer-cum-editor-cum-film-champion missing. Be there or be elsewhere!

5.what are your top 5 favorite Fulci movies?
I can't say I was ever a huge Fulci fan, to be perfectly honest, though I had a pal back in Falkirk, Stevie, who was a Fulci obsessive and would take great pleasure in tracking down Lucio obscurities like A Lizard in a Woman's Skin or The Naples Connection (a film I remember talking about with the sadly-deceased Sage Stallone, a huge Fulci fan, whom I met on the same 1996 LA trip mentioned earlier - Justin knew Bob Murawski, Stallone's friend and partner in Grindhouse Releasing; Bob ended up winning the Oscar for The Hurt Locker - and we went to a private screening of Andrea Bianchi's trashy 1981 zombie trash epic Burial Ground at the Hard Rock Café in Beverly Hills) or Don't Torture a Duckling or Beatrice Cenci, even newer shite like Aenigma and such. Personally, I would have to say:

1) Cat in the Brain (just for the sheer trashy overload of it all!)
2) Zombie (aka Zombie Flesheaters in the USA, but the UK title is way better)
3) The Beyond ("ATTACK, DICKY! ATTACK!")
4) House by the Cemetery (Freudstein, one of the best character names ever! "NOT THE CHILDREN!")
5) City of the Living Dead (the classy Italian aristocrat Giovanni Lombardo Radice getting the drill through the skull!)

6.I loved your article in The Deep Red Horror Handbook on "Trans Atlantic Terror Trends" what do you think are the most ridiculous films that ended up on the Video Nasty List?
Thanks. I just liked the fact I got to swear a lot and mock the BBFC! Ah, simple teenage agendas, eh? But without sounding too glib about your question, all of the films on the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) list. The whole fucking thing was ridiculous, and Thatcher's government was a sack of dogshit that sent society-destroying waves through the UK in general that are still being felt decades on. It was fun to laugh at the old Nazi cunt's funeral a few weeks ago, or would have been if it had not cost so much. But for the sake of more serious argument, maybe Blood Feast (utter cheesy shite that nobody could ever take seriously) and The Werewolf and the Yeti (ditto). Driller Killer deserved to be banned just for being shite! Who knows what arbitrary criteria they used to make up that stupid fucking list! But this is such old news, now, this whole tiresome Video Nasty clusterfuck, and it seems now only to be young American horror fans who are obsessed with it and want to talk about it. People who lived through it just want to forget about it and let it die and lie in the dustbin of worthless shitstorm history where it rightfully belongs.

7.I've asked this from all DR alumni and I have to ask you the same question since you've written for FilmThreat! What's you perspective on the Chas Balun trash piece?
Yes, I wrote for both, but I never felt there was a conflict of interest, or that I should take one side or the other in that matter, because I had stopped writing for Deep Red before I ever wrote for Film Threat, and I very much enjoyed writing for them both in similar, but also slightly different, ways. They both gave me good things. They were both coming from a similar place in different ways. I'm not avoiding the question, I'm just telling you what I think of the whole thing. It never meant that much to me, because I was never at the epicenter of it. As I recall, and it's 20+ years ago now, the Film Threat Video Guide took Chas to task for duping $20 bootlegs of Nekromantik, which they were legally selling, and a few letters flew between them and Chas, and between Jorg Buttgereit and Manfred Jelinksi, the director and producer of Nekromantik. I think Chas offered to fight Chris Gore or Dave Williams at some convention one time. I could see why no-budget, hard-working filmmakers would object to having their sales bitten into by the same guy who, ironically, published the first ever USA review of Nekromantik that I wrote! Also ironically, Film Threat used a Chas Balun quote on the back of their video box to help sell it! I am writing a book about Jorg's career, having taken him to Ed Gein's grave last year in Wisconsin, with John Szpunar, and maybe I should bring it up to him for his take on it. But, once again, this is 20+ years ago, and controversies and details fade and, ultimately, who really gives a fuck anymore? I know there was bad blood there because Chris Gore ratted Chas out for providing a bootleg of Guinea Pig that Charlie Sheen took to the FBI as he thought it was real, but it's all ancient history now. Deep Red and Film Threat had a lot in common - they were both underdog upstart zines-cum-mags with attitude, covering obscure and weird shit, with similar spiky, punky, no-bullshit attitudes. It's just that Gore was a lot younger and liked viciously needling people a lot more than Chas did, though he could have his own needling moments too. Many years later Gore would rip Chas off again by calling a section of a show he was in The Gore Score. I guess they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Chas may have changed 'imitation' to 'irritation,' but the concept holds the same!

OK thank you Graham! and TOG readers you heard the man, be sure and check out Fantacon 2013, which will have a Deep Red alumni reunion and the Xerox Ferox and other books will be available to buy, a must for all gorehounds.

Hollywood Strangler Meets The Skidrow Slasher

The Hollywood Strangler Meets The Skidrow Slasher (or Model Killer) Directed By Ray Dennis Steckler (or Wolfgang Schmidt). 1979
I got to meet Ray Dennis Steckler at his video store in Vegas when he showed his films at Las Vegas Grind,a garage rock festival in the 90's,but I had no idea about this lurid film and was only aware of his goofy monster junk like Incredibly Strange Creatures...,Rat Pfink A Boo Boo and The Thrill Killers, all courtesy of Psychotronic Video and Sinister Cinema. I later found out that he also directed porn, this film seems like a precursor toward all out hardcore porn territory, but thankfully its not! Yeeshh!
You dirty rat!

I'd read some really bad reviews of this flick, but when you compare it to Steckler's other films, it's a natural progression and if anything an improvement over his slapstick, Bowery Boys Meets The Monsters schlock. I am very curious to know how he moved from kiddie fare to this wretched territory. And just like Ed Wood after awhile, they both went broke and were forced to churn out uninspired hardcore nightmares!
No thanks!

Even though that's the pattern that both Ed Wood and Steckler eventually moved toward, I was a little shocked by the transition, but mostly delighted to find the beloved director of Wild Guitar moving into "Don't Answer The Phone" rapist photographer terrain!
This is a loose sequel to The Thrill Killers (which seems totally unrelated to me). Yeah there are psychos, but the wacky hijinks make this one seem from another planet!
Anyway, Pierre Agostino plays Johnny Glick (I had to look up his character name cause I don't think its ever uttered once). He looks like a dwarf version of Fred Lincoln and trolls around in his beat up car, looking for models to assault and strangle. Steckler dubs his voice and all of the sound was later added in giving it that Doris Wishman quality. The killer can only find solace with his pigeons and refers to women as "garbage".
I'm wearing depends undergarments

Carolyn Brandt (Steckler's wife) is long in the tooth, but still oddly attractive as a fit senior citizen type frazzled old lady who runs a cheap book store and stabs bums on the side with her switchblade. The strangler appears at various women's houses, how he gets in is a mystery and kills them repeatedly through out the movie, why is it so fascinating? It might have something to do with the fact that Steckler fills the background with weird thrift store records toys and ephemera, making it entertaining just to look at. All of these women should be able to overpower Agostino, it's a totally ridiculous male bullshit rape fantasy!
The porn theaters and grimy locations really make the usual Steckler trademark hokey-ness kinda edgy. Amateur cheesecake photographers are among the lowest forms of humanity to jab at in exploitation films. My favorite aspect about Agostino is how he randomly calls girls, kils them, then never cleans up the bodies and relaxes by eating frozen yogurt or nursing a Bud in the can.
The sassy senior citizen slasher jabs winos in the throat with a switchblade and doesn't ever clean up after the brilliantly red colored poster paint, pouring out of a human body, they both have that attitude of "let someone else deal with the mess". The slasher also runs a bookstore, where hobos constantly wander in, what a nuisance!
Call my agent!

The soundtrack goes from eerie dime store keyboard to cartoony rumpus type music and one victim wears a KISS towel! Agostino actually begins to fall in love with Stecklers wife! Their contact consists of him trying to approach her from across the street, let me tell you, you can cut the chemistry with a knife! Yeah right!
Kiss meets the phantom of the towel

I find it kind of nice that Steckler regards his wife in this regard (but then again he is filming random naked models and ventured into porn (with her in tow), so I take it back! I'm also afraid to watch any of his hardcore stuff, call me a prude I don't care.
Yay Baloon Party!

There's a bizarre rollerskating naked balloon party down at Plato's Retreat West to watch out for! After awhile it the pacing started to grind on my nerves and its seriously repetitious!
I had to ask Steckler about MST3K making fun of his wife and he said he didn't like it and was offended, but didn't let them know or anything. I'm glad I got to meet RDS and he signed all my videos and was generally a nice guy, at the time I was aware that he directed porn, but was too chicken to mention it. I do wish I had seen this before hand because I am curious to know the back story, did he intend to join the slasher movie circuit or was this a one off thing? Anyway I'll never know, Rest In Piece Ray Dennis Steckler. The film is available via Fandor, please click the banner and get a trial, they are the cult movie Netflix!
