I know I'm just being paranoid but it seems like 88 Films decided to raid this blog for ideas on what to put out but here’s a title that we haven’t reviewed. Basically I want to say Thanks for seemingly poaching this blog. That way I don’t have to watch one of these rare Hong Kong films on a porn website, I can rent it on a pristine Blu-ray with excellent packaging. Yes, we have yet another Golden Harvest release!
The music reminds me of that Bryan Adams song for Robin Hood movie. Sammo Hung is attending a wedding and sadly his daughter can’t even get vacation time to go on her honeymoon! Fucked up say I!
Machine guns in fancy foam cases are brought to a fashion show. Smoke pellets are dispensed and a shootout happens. The gun-play is inspired as fuck.
Look out Jackie Chan, Mina (Joyce Godenzi) is in town! The stunts are pretty epic during a car chase with fire and wall climbing. Corey Yuen wrote and directed this as well as Yes,Madam (1985), The Legend (Fong Sai Yuk 1993) and did fight choreography on countless titles. Yuen tragically died of COVID in 2022.
Mina (Godenzi) cock-blocks her husband by saying "Brush your teeth" and "Not before I get promoted do we bang"!
PVC pipe shenanigans are there for some foreshadowing later. There’s a machine gun battle with parrots flying around and one dude plummets onto a cage of birds A Better Tomorrow (1986) style that edits into a Happy Days style dissolve.
They refer to this bespectacled character as Brother who leads a crew of Vietnam terrorists. Wah Yuen plays the main villain, he’s been in everything from Eastern Condors (1987 with Sammo) to Mr. Vampire (1985) and is still acting currently. Joyce Godenzi is also from Eastern Condors and is an impressive actress.
So many of these Golden Harvest classics are being bought up by Criterion or Shout Factory and I’m all for it. The Nam crew all wear red goggles to use night-vision during a gun battle with the female police (or CID agents). This film is not related to Eastern Condors even though it shares half the cast.
One character calls Mina a “ half breed/mongrel” before threatening to quit the force. They bust out all these jungle traps that Ewoks could’ve made. This results in the death of one male character also named Big Bro. They didn’t seem to have time for character names because they put all their effort into stunts. But yeah his name is Chung Bo.
The waterworks start to flow and you know that the revenge to come later will be epic. Mina goes through a traumatic abortion, at least that's what I think happened.
Inspector Lau (Chi-Wing Lau) almost gets his ass beat by Grandma for telling a woman to shut up and basically acting like a dick!
The pacing is weird for an action movie. She Shoots Straight kind of meanders and having two characters named Big Bro is pretty lazy.I watched the film in Cantonese with English subs and I wonder if it's a translation issue. The action sort of peters out and the comedy is pretty thin. Mina (Joyce) is stunning and I’m definitely gonna check out more of her work. On a boat there’s a chain vs. machete battle on the stairs with Mina’s partner played by Sandra Ng Kwun-Yu. Sandra played my favorite character in The Inspector Wears Skirts (1988).
I wonder if the Grandma pulling a gun on big bro inspired Stop or My Mom Will Shoot (1992)! It ends with a girl battle between Mina and a blood spitting, jeans sporting babe with a top that says Surf Fetish. Color me impressed! SLIGHTLY RECOMMENDED! This one has tons of action but the balance of action and wacky comedy is too confusing and gets overwhelming. Worth Checking Out despite my bitching.
